Apply for the City’s 2024 Neighborhood Leadership Academy
Program Provides Citizens a Behind-the-Scenes Look at Municipal Services
July 17, 2024
The City of Tallahassee was founded in 1824 as Florida's Capital City, and today, 200 years later, it proudly serves a diverse community of nearly 200,000 neighbors in all facets of life, work and recreation. Whether enjoying the soft glow of a night light, a smooth commute or a game of disc golf with friends, residents rely on City services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It takes a devoted team of nearly 4,000 people to ensure local municipal service is delivered with the trademark innovation and exemplary quality residents expect from this organization.
Now, you have the opportunity to better know your local municipal service provider by participating in the 2024 Neighborhood Leadership Academy (NLA). Applications are currently being accepted, and space is limited. Citizens interested in participating can apply online at Talgov.com/NLA. Registration closes August 16. Preference will be given to applicants who serve on their homeowners/neighborhood association boards and/or who are active in their neighborhoods.
The academy is an instructional and interactive program designed to empower neighbors with in-depth knowledge about how their local municipal government operates. Through NLA, residents go behind-the-scenes to learn about the City's public infrastructure, public safety, clean energy, local parks, reliable utilities and more that support a strong community, cultivate vibrant neighborhoods and thriving businesses, protect natural resources, and preserve Tallahassee's unique character. For instance, did you know that the City implemented a new time-saving technology to increase proactive wastewater pipe inspection from 28,000 feet per month to 160,000 feet per month? Or that it provided roughly $2.1 million in energy efficiency grants, rebates and loans to customers in Fiscal Year 2023? Or that its average review time for single-family residential permits is less than 3 days? Each NLA session increases participants' understanding of the diverse and complex services provided by the City.
The 2024 academy will begin Tuesday, Sept. 10, and continue every Tuesday evening through Nov. 12. Activities will include tours of City facilities, hands-on demonstrations and multi-media presentations.
