Stay Fire Safe This Holiday Season

Tallahassee Fire Department Kicks Off Keep the Wreath Green

December 01, 2025

The Tallahassee Fire Department (TFD) is bringing back its Keep the Wreath Green program for the 16th year to remind the community about fire safety during the holidays. The large wreath, decorated with 50 green bulbs, will be on display at Dorothy B. Oven Park, located at 3205 Thomasville Road, through Jan. 1, 2026.

Each time a residential fire occurs in our area, a green bulb will be replaced with a red one. "The holiday season is unfortunately one of the busiest times of the year for home fires," said Fire Chief Gene Sanders. "The wreath is a simple, visual way to remind everyone of the importance of fire safety as we celebrate the season."

The program started in 2010, with 41 bulbs turning red that year. Last year nine bulbs were changed from green to red representing the residential house fires occurring during the holidays.

Here's a look at the program's history:

  • 2010: 41 bulbs changed
  • 2011: 38 bulbs changed
  • 2012: 22 bulbs changed
  • 2013: 16 bulbs changed
  • 2014: 15 bulbs changed
  • 2015: 14 bulbs changed
  • 2016: 11 bulbs changed
  • 2017: 15 bulbs changed
  • 2018: Nine bulbs changed
  • 2019: Eight bulbs changed
  • 2020: 13 bulbs changed
  • 2021: Nine bulbs changed
  • 2022: Six bulbs changed
  • 2023: Nine bulbs changed
  • 2024: Nine bulbs changed

TFD encourages everyone to follow these tips to help keep the wreath green:

  • Test all smoke alarms and replace batteries if needed.
  • Stay in the kitchen while cooking, and never leave fryers or grills unattended.
  • Keep flammable objects like towels, packaging and decorations away from heat sources.
  • If using a live tree, water it daily to prevent it from drying out.
  • Turn off holiday lights and extinguish candles before leaving home or going to bed.
  • Use fireplaces safely by keeping embers contained and ensuring they're fully extinguished before bed.

The Tallahassee Fire Department wishes everyone a warm, safe holiday season. Stay connected to the department on Facebook, X and Instagram or by visiting Talgov.com/Fire.
